Can an ICD 1 be modified to program 16F88 & 16F7X7's, or should I go for an AVR?

I can't upgrade to MPLab 6.x and use my ICD 1.

I don't want to cough up $180 for a new ICD 2.

Someone know how to modify MPLab 5.x and/or reprogram an ICD1?

I see Atmel is giving away AVR JTAGICE in-circuit debuggers at their
seminars. AVR's look like they have more bang for the buck, in small
quantities anyways. Anyone taking that path have comments for an AVR
newbee? The pros/cons of MPLab-ICD 2 vs. AVR Studio 4 with JTAGICE?

Thanks,

Scott

Yes, you should be aware that AVR is giving away
only OLD JTAG-ICE units. They have a new unit
coming out. I wouldn't want you to get stuck again
with an ICD-1, when the ICD2 is going to be used
for all future development.

At 180, the icd2 is enough make me stop and think if I should buy one
given that I'm sort of staddled between pic and avr development.
However, olimex has an ICD2 clone for $90. Has anyone used it? the
price is close to my level of pain. my guess is that it works but
with some rough edges. comments?
