USB to serial

Has anyone used a USB-to-serial converter to connect a USB device to
a PIC?

I would like to be able to connect my Pencam, which has a USB
interface, to a PIC to control it and take pictures and such. But I
wonder how the commands would work since the protocol is different.

This is a FAQ.

USB is not symmetric. An USB-to-serial converter connects an USB
*master* to a serial port. You can not connect it to an USB device,
because that's an USB *slave*.
