Behold, the New Comments System!

Stephane BoucherSeptember 18, 201229 comments

I have just finished implementing a new system for commenting the blogs.  It uses Ajax extensively, so the page won't reload if you post a comment.  And it is a 'threaded' system, which means that if you post a reply to a comment, it will be attached to it.

What do you think?  I personally love it.  Please go ahead and test it with a quick comment.

Although it is better to be logged in to post a comment, non-registered users can also comment, but they will have to confirm their email addresses for their comments to be posted.

I like the look and feel if it. Could do with 1 or 2 more levels. Maybe with a smaller indentation. Much more than this and the comments will become harder to read.

I find on mine that the number countdown under this text entry box is partially obscured by the text box. Is this a design feature? Or a Chrome browser issue?

Is the comment / conversation threading only 1 deep? I don't see a reply to a reply? Otherwise very nice.

Very reminiscent of James Allen on F1. Their commenting system allows for at most 3 or 4 levels, and a lot of conversations simply stop dead because of it.

Unfortunately, you can't march things over to the right forever.

Otherwise, not bad. It seems to load and render nice and quickly, and it's pretty clear which reply is attached to each parent. The characters remaining counter is clipped on the top and on the right on Chrome 21 for Linux - dunno if that's a deliberate style thing or not.

One other thing: it appears I can upvote my own comment. Is that intentional?

Yes, only one reply deep - at least for now.

A couple comments and observations:

1. The more "social" commenting is nice. I think this will be a good going forward.
- ability to thumbs up / down comments (will this reflect an
- picture / avatar
2. This captured some of the "features" requested (.e.g. threaded comment view)
3. The user picture (avatar) is associated with the email entered and not the *related pics? I like the pictures.
4. Comment features that current don't exist
- markdown
- multiple levels of threading
- ability to edit / delete comments (I often typo and want to fix)

Looks good and very usable comment system, good upgrade.

(I was logged in and didn't have to confirm email, bug looks fixed)

The *star* rating on the post is not working.

Comment by stephanebSeptember 17, 2012
There must be a conflict with the comments script. I will investigate.

Also, the number of comments doesn't show up on the main page blog roll.

I noticed the post has stars now, but I am not able to modify the stars?

Comment by stephanebSeptember 18, 2012
Both issues - comments on the homepage + star ratings - should be fixed now. Thanks.

Looks like it is working, it was odd, when I first loaded the page I clicked the star to see if it was working, then was going to reply I could modify the "star" but there were no "reply" buttons for the comments? I reloaded the page and the reply buttons were back. I could have been the page didn't load fully (was some need javascript message at the bottom of the page).

I might have spoken too soon. There still seem to be some instability...

I'm not a big fan of the visual style for the stars when voting. When the mouse is rolled over them, it looks as if stars are being taken away from the left, which is a little disconcerting. When I voted, I wasn't exactly sure what the result was going to be.

? like the layout. The gray box makes the thread more readable with a single depth. However, if there will be more depths added in the future, this feature may degrade readability and to track which depth one is reading.

Degrade readability? How? The text lines become too short? My experience many micro-conversations can occur. To follow the conversations threading helps immensely.

Don't get me wrong, the new commenting functionality is really nice. And maybe only a one deep thread is ok for the number of comments currently? But I agree with @wwensley, a couple more depths preferred and maybe slightly less indentation.

Two things I would find useful:
+More depth - a lot of times you want to reply to a reply, not the original text.
+More formatting options - the grey box with the darker grey characters are readable, but not without my glasses.
