Hi all,
I wonder what is the NAND flash you use in a design with an at91sam7s parts
?
Size, brand etc...
We are looking to put 1 Nand on our design but this is the first time we do
this. We have always put dataflash and not nand.

With regard to using the FLASH through SPI interface, I have tried using a few, amongst them, "AT45DB321" and "AT45DB642". I think the latter is only available in MLF pinout. About the size, the MLFparts are much smaller, but the 28 pin TSOP, the 8 pin SOIC and the 8 pin MLF.
I have not tries these with SAM7S, but assume they work through the SPI.

Those memory are not Nand Flash I think. They are DataFlash. More expensive
also.

But actually I think that they are simple to use and for my local market readily available, I do't know where to find Nand flash, but actually you got me interested, and I will look for some next time. About being expensive, I think the dataflash which is also available in the capacities of 4 Gigabytes, if you donot like the parts I mentioned in last post, and they are not certainly expensive, because the same pieces are readily used as storage on the mobile devices and handys.

NAND requires either a dedicated controller or filesystem software interface.
Physically the NAND can be accessed through the GPIO pins, the complexity comes in the handling of bad sectors and wear leveling.
I've used NAND directly to CPU running in linux, see: http://www.yaffs.net/
You might be able to make that driver work in OSless environments, probably some work though.

Dataflash only goes up to 8MBytes according to the atmel product guide.
NAND flash goes up to far higher densities and is far cheaper.

You are right, the dataflash is is only available in much lower capacities than NAND flash. However, if the read-write speed matters, then I guess there is no other way and NAND has to be used. But if the speed does not matter, we can simply use the dataflash units available in the SD-MMC cards. I am actually going to do this at the moment, and this should be easy.
What is difficult with the NAND is making sure about the model and part that is ok to work with, and this is not easily available. Do you have some available NAND units to go with the AT91SAM7x ?

Yeah i have done some project with sd/mmc card and its pretty stratforwed.
But Now for a 2gig and up, we think about using the NAND flash. Right now I
have no idea of part number to use.

Yeah i have done some project with sd/mmc card and its pretty stratforwed.
But Now for a 2gig and up, we think about using the NAND flash. Right now I
have no idea of part number to use.

Hi there,
You are right, the dataflash is is only available in much lower capacities
than NAND flash. However, if the read-write speed matters, then I guess
there is no other way and NAND has to be used. But if the speed does not
matter, we can simply use the dataflash units available in the SD-MMC cards.
I am actually going to do this at the moment, and this should be easy.
What is difficult with the NAND is making sure about the model and part that
is ok to work with, and this is not easily available. Do you have some
available NAND units to go with the AT91SAM7x ?

Dataflash only goes up to 8MBytes according to the atmel product guide.
NAND flash goes up to far higher densities and is far cheaper.
