GSM module

Started by Luben March 5, 2012
Hi, can you tell me please what GSM module can I use to easly communicate with MSP 430 board?
There are many modules and I don't know wich to choose, can you give me a sugestion. Thanks'

Adrian

Beginning Microcontrollers with the MSP430

My current weapon of choice would be the GE865 from telit. Compact,
plenty of good documentation (although the extended AT codes stuff is
quite convolute, and not always 100% clear). For evaluation Sparkfun
make a great little Eval board. it took me less than 30 minutes to send
an SMS and receive one back using one of my spare old PCB designs. I
haven't looked around for anything more compact yet.

Be aware that with most of these modems although mean current may be
fairly low, for example 135mA, IIRC for the GE865 the power supply must
be capable of delivering 2A peak. You also can't rely on 2A peak pulse
current rating for a battery. most of these are based on very short
pulse, typically a few usecs, and generally less than 3msecs, so i
suggest for battery power you find a battery that is capable of a
sustained 2.5A MINIMUM continuous current rating. Flytown Power have
some extremely attractive comparatively small batteries with ratings up
to 75C. GMB also have a decent, affordable battery range, but are more
geared to volume sales.

The uBlox unit is also a decent one, but was slightly more expensive,
and a little harder to get, it is also physically larger, which makes a
big difference to me.

Cheers

There is one at 43oh which uses a Bluetooth GPS for a Geocache Box.

He wanted GSM not GPS.

I'm sorry. Totally misread that.
Onestone summarizes it.
You could also google for "GSM Arduino" to get a grasp of what people are
using.
Good luck.

We use the TC65i and a MSP430F5419, no problems.
