Hi,
I develop for the MSP430F5418A using IAR, and the TI USB programmer box works
fine in that environment.
We tried to use the Elprotronic free software with the TI USB box and are having
big trouble. It works, then it can't see the box. A box works once and
never again. A laptop/programmer pair that worked fine no longer works.
It's very frustrating.
We can't afford IAR licenses for our netbooks just to update the firmware
in our field units, we need something more affordable.
Anyone have any experience that can help? A way to get Elprotronic working, or
another supplier's software that is more reliable?
Thanks,
Lloyd
Elprotronic programmer software giving us trouble

You might have a look at the free Olimex *MSP430-PROGRAMMER *GUI
software that uses their *MSP430-JTAG-TINY* USB-JTAG pod.. There is
also a command line program that uses the TI USB-JTAG pod called
MSP430-Flasher.

Why not mspdebug?
http://mspdebug.sourceforge.net/

We use both for development with the 1611 and 5438A. The only thing I had
problems with are the libraries that came with the Elprotronic software were
newer than the ones used by my development tools (both IAR and Crossworks) - so
I just copied over the HIL.dll and MSP430.DLL (renamed to MSP430-TI.dll) from
the development tools to the Elprotronic program area (overwriting the
libraries. I was never able to get the V3 FET firmware to work right. I still
use V2.4.8.2. Also, the FET tool generally doesn't have enought power to
drive the target board (unless it is a simple design), so we program our units
with the board power on. A few times I had to do the Verify function first to
establish communication to the FET before I did Auto in the Elprotronic
software.

We use the Elprotronic free software with the TI USB JTAG programmer and it
works well. We did the firmware upgrades to bring it to the latest level which
it should be noted no longer makes it compatible with the IAR C-SPY debugger.
Since we are not big on debuggers in the first place, this was not a major loss.
Ultimately we did buy a second TI USB JTAG unit just to use with the IAR
debugger just in case we ever needed it.
I am sure there are other ways around this, but time is ultimately money and eliminating the frustration over your tools is worth the cost of a second programming pod.

We use the smartRF software that TI provides, we'd originally downloaded it
for programming a cc2530 chip, but it also does MSP430 devices.
Not sure if it works with the Elprotronic software, but it does work with the TI USB FET hardware.
