excess heat problem

Started by Anupama September 28, 2012
Hi,

I am working with MSP430F1611.It will read a frequency input from another sensor from TI.I have made the full pcb packaging as compact as possible so that the power supply module and all other components fit into a 98*98*58mm IP65 compact enclosure. I have kept this product powered ON continously for nearly a month and observed that the frequecy count is getting reduced .IS this problem due to the increased heat inside the enclosure? Or is it because of some other problem? Please give me a solution.

Beginning Microcontrollers with the MSP430

Your question is very vague, perhaps you should try psychics 'R us. The
obvious answer is yes and yes. yes it could be heat build up, who knows?
You have no details of your circuit, layout or other components that
might generate heat. And yes it could be another problem.

What are the crystal specs? have you measured the temperature? is it
drifting or gradually increasing. i doubt the latter, since it would
likely peak at some maximum, and if this is the cause of your problem
the frequency would stop drifting.

As usual not enough information, too vague a question.

What is the time and temp drift spec for this sensor?

Just curious.

Jon
Why not run two devices simultaneously and put one in the fridge? Or maybe even three devices - fridge, room temp, oven (not too hot!)? This should speed-up your testing.

I suggest you also instrument your code to self-test your voltage references (if you are using them).

What "frequency input" device are you using? That's a key piece of data, too.

Hi Anupama,

measure the temperature of the MSP430 (there is a temperature sensor inside
the MSP) and see if there are any correlations between the freq and the
temperature change.
