Finally got a drone!

Stephane BoucherAugust 28, 20172 comments

As a reader of my blog, you already know that I have been making videos lately and thoroughly enjoying the process.  When I was in Germany early this summer (and went 280 km/h in a porsche!) to produce SEGGER's 25th anniversary video, the company bought a drone so we could get an aerial shot of the party (at about the 1:35 mark in this video).  Since then, I have been obsessing on buying a drone for myself and finally made the move a few weeks ago - I acquired a used DJI Phantom 4.

My main motivation to get the drone was the ability if would give me to get amazing shots from the top and increase the production value for some of my videos when using a drone is possible (and legal!).  What I didn't expect was how much fun flying this thing would be.  I haven't had fun like this with a 'toy' for a very long time.

A couple of weeks ago, I asked my three kids and four of their cousins to draw something on the beach so I could film the process with the drone. I also had a camera taking photos every 5 seconds so I could alternate between a timelapse from the side and a drone view from the top.   They chose to draw a turtle.  Make sure to watch in HD and to turn on the sound.

Neat Stephane!  I wonder how the kids ended up with such a symmetrical turtle.  If I'd have tried that, my turtle would have looked like the following:

Haha, yeah, I have no idea how they managed to get it right on their very first try.  Thanks for the comment Rick.
