Looking for reference design - HCS12 with external flash - expanded wide mode

Started by xeorok February 10, 2003
Before I commit to a PCB I am looking for a couple of reference
designs that work to check my design against !!!! I am using an
MC9S12DP256 microcontroller with an AM29F800B (512k byte X 16 bit
wide) flash memory chip for external program memory. I want to be
able to use the P&E BDM multilink and their programming software to
program the flash.

If anyone has a reference design please email it to me or fax it to
me at 972.753.2643

Any help would br greatly appreciated.

Steve

Steve,

Download AN2287 from the web.

Gordon:

I have studied AN2287 and derived my design from that document. I
was looking for similar designs to evaluate my design against to try
to minimize or eliminate "Gotchas" on my circuit board. If you know
of any reference designs please let me know? Motorola promised
reference designs in app note AN2408/D (page 27 in AN2287), but it
has not been released yet.

Ask Motorola through technical support and also look at axiom web site.
There is a little disparity in Motorola's advice which is; The address latch
hold time should be 0nS but actually the best I can do in theory is 1.5nS +
one gate delay. Having said that the address does not change to data for a
number nS after enable theoretically.

I wonder if anyone has had a problem with this last aspect, I am also
advised that programmable logic probably would not be fast enough. It is
also difficult to check that the external devices, RAM/ROM etc. drive to
good 5V levels. Andrew Lohmann AIIE

Steve,

Designing with the DP256 and external memory is something that I don't
recommend for general DP256 and HCS12 users. There are several potential
places you may fall with when designing with external memory for the DP256.
A few of them are outlined in AN2287, but not all are thoroughly covered by it.

This recommendation is based on my experience as a designer of
full-featured emulators for the HCS12. In the case of full-featured
emulators the external bus must be used, so I had to resolve these problem
and did, but it has involved much effort.

You can check the following two alternative routs for your application:

1. If you require more program memory, see if you can get the DP512 which
is mentioned at:

http://e-www.motorola.com/brdata/PDFDB/docs/HCS12DFAMILYPP.pdf

It has 512K of Flash on chip which may be enough for your code.

2. If you need an even bigger flash in order to store large tables of
non-volatile data, please look into operating the DP256 in Single Chip mode
and read/write the external flash device through special read and write
routines that will manipulate general-purpose port pins. This will be a
slower way, but more safe timing-wise than using the external bus. You can
use the same PORT A, B, E and K pins (except for PE4 which is ECLK I
think), but manipulate them as port pins rather than bus pins. You would
still probably need the voltage translation as outlined in AN2287.

Hope this helps,
