fpga recommendations?

Started by dzone007 June 10, 2009
Hi guys!

I am currently having my project proposal and I intend to do an fpga based
file transfer between 2 USB storage devices. I will also implement a
LCD(preferably colored) screen for the user interface. I need you
suggestions, recommendations about this project.
Thank you

Choose the right tool for the job. This is really an embedded processor application not an FPGA application. If you really want to use an FPGA, pick one big enough to put a process inside of. Use an embedded processor when what you want to do it complicated or procedural in nature and the hardware support requirements can be taken care of by off-the-shelf peripheral ICs. Use an FPGA when what you want to do is simpler to describe but must be blindingly fast or widely parallel, and cannot be handled by the off-the-shelf parts. If your requirement is not yet clear, pick a huge FPGA, accesorize it with RAM, and plan on building a processor plus hardware support in the FPGA fabric.
