Embedded ALI M6117D & Linux or DOS?

Started by Andreas March 22, 2004
Hi!

For an embedded project we want to use the Mity SoC Module with 4MB RAM
and ALI M6117D CPU from http://www.icop.com.tw.
Our application allows us to choose between linux or dos.
We need network, serial port and a few I/Os.
What do we have to consider? Does anyone know dos license pricing? Has
anyone worked successfully with that kind of CPU-board either with dos
or linux? Are there good links how to start?

Thanks!

Networking is probably an easier proposition under Linux, but 4Mb is pretty tight. I don't even know if MS-DOS can still be licensed, but have you considered an alternative DOS, like FreeDOS?
Yes, that's it! Thanks. Nice solution!

I did not go checking recently but Annabooks used to license MS-DOS. And Datalight still licenses their DOS version AFAIK. Regards. Elder.

Here is a *much* better solution: http://www.freedos.org/ -- Guy Macon, Electronics Engineer & Project Manager for hire. Remember Doc Brown from the _Back to the Future_ movies? Do you have an "impossible" engineering project that only someone like Doc Brown can solve? My resume is at http://www.guymacon.com/

With all due respect, I'd dare saying *much* better only if/when I tried it. I remember having seen somewhere freedos still has some serious compatibility problems. I did not check on this though as I have no direct interest on the subject. Regards. Elder.

These problems are more important in the context of running GI DOS software, though. If you're writing an embedded app, really all you need to care about is supporting the "infrastructure programs" (packet drivers, and so on). Anyway, FreeDOS is certainly worth _investigating_.
