8th is expanding its embedded offerings

Started by Ron Aaron April 21, 2016
8th (http://8th-dev.com/) is a secure, Forth-derived, cross-platform
language. It currently supports Windows, Linux, OS X, Android, iOS and
Raspberry Pi.

The RPI port was our first venture into the embedded arena. We have
been asked to expand our embedded support, so we've started an Indiegogo
campaign to help raise the funds for that development effort.

The campaign is here:
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/8th-mobile-desktop-and-now-embedded/x/13844029#/

Please take a look, and pass on to anyone you think might be interested.
We're also happy to partner with sufficiently motivated companies or
individuals.

Hi Ron, "Mid range" ARM less capable than Pi are very vague... Do you have in mind Cortex-M chips? There are very capable ones M4 and M7, with quite a lot of internal RAM and usually supporting external RAM too. Also "No GUI" is quite common, but there are again some Cortex-M chips with quite capable GUI engines (see STM32F4xx, STM32F7xx, LPC40xx, LPC43xx, LPC18xx). I admit that a GUI library is not trivial for such chips, but still... I'm asking because mid-range can be Cortex-M families but also ARM9/Cortex-A5 families that can run Linux but are far less capable than Pi but more capable than Cortex-M ones.

Yes, yes it is :o

The answer to your question (and it's a good question) is that the specific hardware to be supported is "to be determined". We're open to suggestions at this stage. Regarding GUI vs no-GUI, we will probably have several versions to accommodate different platforms. Thanks for the questions!

So the first target has been set: Mikromedia+. It is possible we'll target PIC32 after that, but it really depends on what the demand is.

Does 8th provide cross-platform BLE support?

It does, though it's still being developed.

Just an update: we now have a partner who is designing and producing the upcoming "embedded-8th board". See more here: http://8th-dev.com/forum/index.php/topic,923.0.html
