Using a USB serial adapter with Philips Flash Utility

Started by Sutton Mehaffey September 9, 2008
I just got a new computer up and running due to a crash. My new one
doesn't have a serial port. Even though I use JTAG to program my
LPC2148, I decided to try and get the Flash Utility working. It
connects and starts uploading, but never finishes. It always times
out and I get 'Cannot communicate with test board'. I restart and it
will start uploading, but quit at different times. Can you use a
serial adapter with this utility? I'm using 2.2.3 and my freq. is
11059. I'm using XP.

This works for me - I use Keyspan adapters.

The important thing is that your adapter supports control lines to wiggle
the ISP and RESET lines on the target.

I assume you are using FlashMagic? Just use the normal serial port
settings. I always try to read device signature first - should happen very
quickly.

It works fine with a Belkin USB-serial adapter. It won't work with a
Prolific USB-serial adapter. The timeout timing must be more
forgiving with the Belkin. You get what you pay for.

PoUSB12 from www.poscope.com works fine.
Philips flash utility is outdated. Use: http://www.flashmagictool.com/

If you want to use the Prolific, you might try changing the FlashMagic time
settings for reset and ISP delays. Or simply use Belkin.

FlashMagic was funded by Philips. It is the currently recommended software.
Google FlashMagic. Some of the newer chips are not supported by the older
Philips software. It is free.

Note that it is free for *development use* only. The licence states:

"...Flash Magic is provided free as a DEVELOPMENT TOOL ONLY. It is NOT
LICENSED FOR PRODUCTION, TESTING OR IN FIELD USE."

I have been using Flashmagic and LPC21.exe in Windows
and the only time i reached full speed was when it was directly
connected to the computer.(HP Compaq). Unfortunatly the serial port died.
and im now using "USB Quad Serial Adapter" from VSCOM or
"USB to serial addapter" from ROTRONIC LOGISTICS.
NONE of these has enabled me to run at full speed.(115200 Baud)
at CPU Frequence 60MHz. It always works with (19200 Baud).
