Flash Magic and USB serial port

Started by jdauchot October 17, 2009
Hi

For all interested, I have purcahsed a Card Bus Serial card to work with flash Magic (Startech 2 Port 16950 Serial RS-232 CardBus Adapter)
and it works like magic on my laptop.

Just for the record:
Flash magic with FT232Q USB/TTL also works correctly.

Hi

Well, what understand from flash Magic is that they do not like USB to serial converters

This is a change in the latest versions? Where did you get that from?

I've been working with the FT232Q for years...

Hi This is from flash magic people OK

Hi Jean-Jacques,

USB to RS232 cables are a huge pain and often don't work properly.
Unfortunately I don't know which ones do work. I would suggest trying a different one or buying a PCI/PCMCIA card with COM ports.

regards, Andy

I often use Flash Magic to program one of my LPCxxxx boards through USB... However, I use another LPC2144 (soon to be LPC2366) in-between that, acting as a bridge between USB and RS-232 to that remote board. Software is LPCUSB and is just part of my bootloader which can be told to be a plain old bridge.

BTW, I find that 38.4 K Baud works best with the autobaud for some reason.

I use no-brand USB-RS232 with LPC2103 and no problems whatsoever.

For some reason though, it can;t autobaud sense so I have to set it to 38,400 to make it work with my boards.

I have not used one with a LPC2xxx processor but I find at work when
many brands fail to work, USB to RS232 dongles from IOGear have
always worked even when other brands have failed. I gave a couple to
the maintenance department to connect to CNC controllers and now they
only buy IOGear. I'll find out soon enough, a project I'm working on
will requires one since my PC does not have RS242 ports.

I don't have a clue if they are available outside the USA, but they
typically cost about $14.

>From my experience, some USB to serial converter chips do not bother to implement the DTR and RTS lines correctly. This is ok for phone connection leads etc which to not need these lines. Flash Magic uses these lines to reset the traget and to enable bootloader mode. This is where your problem comes. I have found FTDI chips to be very reliable and work correctly with may different types of programmer software.

We build an FTDI FT232R chip onto our PCB's to provide USB programming for our LPC2148 designs, and this works faultlessly. As an asside we also use a FT323R chip on another board which uses a Rabbit RCM3200 processor which has a much more awkward programming sequence (It changes baudrate on the fly).

So in my experience FTDI USB converters work well, and work with Flash Magic.

Hi!

PoUSB12 works well.
LPCs are programmed on max speed 230400
Look for it here: www.poscope.com
