FET with c-spy debugger

Started by Raghavendra Bulusu March 16, 2003
Hi

I am trying to test how a FET works along with the new IAR
embedded c/c++ compiler and debugger.I wrote a sample code to flash the
led.I have the flash emulation tool from SOFTBAUGH,I guess this FET is directly
connected to the parrallel port with out any interfaces in between(also i need
not give external voltage supply i guess),I am connecting this FET to the demo
kit D1232 from softbaugh on the other side.when I am trying to debug I am
getting an error that the specified target is not found.I changed the target to
msp430f1232 in the project--> options-->general,and also to FET in the
c-spy debugger,I am working on a win2000 environment.what could be the possible
errors.

Thanks
raghu

Beginning Microcontrollers with the MSP430

Hello, Raghu -

There are many things that can cause this. I can list a few causes but
I know there are others, also.

1. No power to processor
2. Wrong processor (actual processor must be the same as the target)
3. Bad connection to demo board

Hi james
I tried verifying all the possible errors you were listing but still i
couldnt solve it.I just wanted to make sure that i am connecting properly, this
are the connections i made
 pc(parallel port)---->softbaugh(FET)---->JTAG to JFPC
interface----->strip to JFPc on demo board.
what else could be the error.
Thanks

Raghu -

I am not familiar with the hardware you mention so I can't help you!

Sorry..

In this situation TI's own FET kits are handy, as you can run a demo
program on their hardware before replacing their demo board with your own
or someone else's.

Do you have the flex strip polarized in the connector (right side up)?

Also, try writing Tom directly, he might help you out with his boards.

Hello:

I have had a similar problem (Could not find target...) with the
small MSP-FET430x11x
demonstration board that TI gave away in its seminars. The board
provides the standard JTAG circuitry and a socket for a 430F1121
chip. An old Toshiba laptop would recognize this board and program
the 430 chip with a simple LED-flash program. But my main Pentium PC
will not. (I am using the same IAR tools on both computers.) I have
tried all of the different parallel-port settings, SPP, EPP, and ECP,
without success. I also fed +6V to the external power input on the
board (through an on-board voltage regulator), thinking the parallel
port might not power the FET board. That did not work, either. As a
final test, I applied +3V directly to the circuits, without going
through the regulator. No luck with that configuration, either. I
have exhausted my attempts with this board. Please let me know what
you come up with to get around this problem.--Jon Titus, Milford, MA,

Make sure if you are using a Win2K/XP solution that you have enough
privilege to use the parallel port (ie Read/Write access). Are you a
local system admin of your own machine ? WinNT/98/95 do not have ACL's
for the parallel port, Win2k and XP do. This can keep you chasing your
tail for quite a period of time.
