IrDA-USB adapter with demo board

Started by jpenabanquinet February 17, 2005

Hello all.

I'm using a demo board with RCM3700 to test IrDA communications. My PC
runs WinXP SP1 with no IrDA port. Because of that I bought an IrDA to
USB adapter.

I wrote a simple C program in DC 8.20 that sends an ASCII message
through Serial Port F connected to the IrDA trasciver in the demo
board. What I need to know is if that message gets to the PC.

If I did the same with RS232, I can use Hyperterminal. What can I use
in this case (IrDA to USB adapter)? I downloaded an USB Sniffer
(http://benoit.papillault.free.fr/usbsnoop/) but I get a huge TXT file
that can't understand. What I need is some kind of "Hyperterminal" for
visualizaton of the message.

Thank you all.

How the PC communicates with the adapter depends on the driver Windows has
assigned to it. You want an "IR dongle" that uses only the HP-SIR low-level
protocol. If your adapter appears on the PC as a virtual COM port, you may
be able to access it the same as if were RS-232. If not, go to Windows
Device Manager and see if you can "update" the driver to "IR dongle."

Otherwise, you might be able to use a USB/RS-232 adapter connected to an
RS-232/IrDA adapter configured as an IR dongle. (No guarantees.)
