Dallas Semi DS275

Started by Vic Fraenckel January 11, 2005
Has anyone tried the Dallas Semiconductor DS275 Transceiver in place of a
MAX232? Seems simpler to use and needs no support capacitors. Whats your
experience; liked it - hated it?

Any enlightenment will be appreciated.

TIA

Vic

I use the MAX233 (not MAX232) and similar devices all the time. The
233 doesn't need external capacitors, either. The MAX3233 is also
useful for 3.3V systems and the MAX3235 for 5V systems.

I haven't used the Dallas variant.

The main problem with the ds275 is that it derives its negative supply from
the incoming serial signal. In other words, it is just an IC version of
the simple 1 transistor + diode + cap + resistors serial TX driver circuit
seen in so many projects. That means that it suffers the same problems.

It will work just fine so long as the device you are connecting to contains
a real RS232 port. It won't work if the device you are connecting to uses
a similar driver circuit.

Dwayne,

Thanks for the info. I'll go with the MAX2xx instead.

The DS275 is a clever hack that works 99.9% of the time (a made-up number), but if you really need to meet the letter of the RS232 specification, you need to go with a REAL RS232 device. As it happens, I designed all three of the devices (with internal capacitors) you mentioned at Maxim, so I may have a bias on the topic; but since Dallas is now part of Maxim, I don't care which device you use.
